Marine Advanced Research and HP

When Marine Advanced Research set out to design an ultralight, innovative ship, there was only one computer up to the task: the HP Workstation.

Unlike other boats, which move through the water, Proteus moves on top of it. Classified as a "wave adaptive modular vessel," Proteus is ideally suited for rescue missions and research because it can easily navigate shallow as well as deep waters without disturbing marine life.

Engineering that kind of boat requires some powerful hardware. So Marine Advanced Research fired up the HP xw4600 Workstation. It has the memory and processing power to create digital prototypes with thousands of moving parts. They could verify a design-checking interference and flexibility—without having to go into full build. As a result, they cut design time in half.

But the story doesn't end there. Workstations are crucial in building the next generation of the ship. Data is being collected on how Proteus interacts with the ocean and will be loaded into Workstations for future designs.

DreamWorks:
DreamWorks and HP
When DreamWorks decided to turn an 260-pound panda into a kung fu warrior, they didn't look to a desktop. They brought their idea to life with high-performance Workstations.

Since 2001, DreamWorks and HP have worked together to bring cutting-edge technology to animation. And that means artistic decisions, instead of technical ones, lead the creative process.

With every film, DreamWorks brings more visual complexity to the screen. More details are created under the same deadlines. Hair (and sometimes fur) is more life-like. Clothing moves. And lighting becomes more natural. All of which makes for great storytelling.

But HP Workstations aren't just for animators. A whole range of creative professionals — architects to engineers to product designers to game creators — use them to transform their ideas into realities — quickly, reliably and, most surprisingly, affordably.

Neenan and HP
With their HP Workstations, the architects at Neenan have the power to make one-of-a-kind buildings uniquely affordable.

One of Neenan's clients wanted to make a big impression but didn't have an oversize budget. So the architects enlisted their HP xw8600 Workstations to build a multitude of prototypes, designing and rendering until they hit the perfect combination-structurally, aesthetically and financially. With ample memory and processing power, the Workstations crunch through detailed 3-D models in no time, while HP's performance-tuning software prevents digital bottlenecks.

In addition, Neenan uses 3-D technology to design green building. For example, HP Workstations can render models that show natural light and the heat it gives off. Architects can then reposition windows, vents or even the building itself for the most energy-efficient configuration. Thanks to Neenan's designs, clients have achieved impressive annual energy savings and maintenance costs.*

For Neenan and architects everywhere, smart design starts with HP Workstation. And now, having all the power at your fingertips costs less than you might think.
