Surface-mount resistors may be required. A Melf-type resistor replacement, the new ERJ series SMD thick film style resistors offer numerous benefits over the previous style devices, namely reduced costs, optimized mounting speed, simpler mounting equipment (no nuzzle required) and better solder joint reliability against temperature cycles. These are compact thick film type chip resistors with high power and high anti-surge characteristics, meeting the new design engineer requirements and making the parts suitable for industrial, measurement and telecommunication applications as well as for automotive circuits.. The anti-surge characteristics of Panasonic's new SMD thick-film style resistors are superior to standard metal film resistors.

Micrel
A voltage regulator for 3.3V can supply power to microcontrollers. One to consider is the MIC5162, which is a dual regulator controller designed for high-speed bus termination. It offers a simple, low-cost JEDEC compliant solution for terminating high-speed, low-voltage digital buses. It controls two external N-Channel MOSFETs to form two separate regulators. It operates by switching between either the high-side MOSFET or the low-side MOSFET depending on whether the current is being sourced to the load or sinked by the regulator. Designed to provide a universal solution for bus termination regardless of input voltage, output voltage, or load current, the desired MIC5162 output voltage can be programmed by externally forcing the reference voltage. The MIC5162 operates from an input of 1.35V to 6V, with a second bias supply input required for operation. It is available in the tiny MSOP-10 package with operating junction temperature range of –40°C to +125°C.

The SuitSat
The application of an 8-bit microcontroller to an unmanned space suit provides one of the more unusual examples of the uses for these ubiquitous embedded computing devices. The SuitSat transmitted information that was heard around the world. Development for space had a few unique requirements but the design methodology can be applied to down to earth products.
Defcon 16 Badge
A tradeshow badge seems like an unlikely place to find an 8-bit microcontroller. Joe Grand, inventor and owner of Grand Idea Studio thought otherwise. For Joe, it was a perfect match for Defcon 16, a 2008 convention for hacker and computer security experts. Hear his reasoning and find out about the technology he used.
